WEST MIDLANDS INTERNATIONAL CRIME GANG JAILED
2nd March 2010 Three members of an international criminal gang involved in smuggling around 11 million cigarettes, evading £1.7 million in duty and laundering the criminal proceeds were jailed for a total of eleven years and four months today.

2nd March 2010 A new £1 million scheme to protect vulnerable communities from the threat of flooding in high-risk areas of the North East of Scotland has been officially launched by Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead.

2nd March 2010 Scotland's Chief Statistician today published statistics on Police Officer Quarterly Strength, which give the number of full-time equivalent police officers employed by the eight Scottish police forces.
SCOTLAND: RISE IN NUMBER OF POLICE OFFICERS
2nd March 2010 Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill today welcomed figures showing that at December 31, 2009 there were 17,273 police officers in Scotland - 1,039 more than March 2007.

HMIC: INTELLIGENCE AND WITNESS PROTECTION
24th February 2010 Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) has the duty and authority to inspect police forces in the public interest. HMIC decided that it would assess whether Nottinghamshire Police and Lincolnshire Police now offer the appropriate levels of protection to the public; specifically in respect of intelligence sharing and witness protection. This is likely to be a matter of significant public interest during the inquests into the deaths of John Stirland and Joan Stirland, and subsequent to the delivery of the verdict.

20 YEARS BEHIND BARS FOR MULTI-MILLION POUND SMUGGLERS
23rd February 2010 Two Essex men behind an international smuggling operation were today jailed for almost 20 years for their part in smuggling 11 million cigarettes, 5 tonnes of hand rolling tobacco and thousands of litres of wine into the UK. In a bid to avoid the estimated £6 million duty they concealed the illegal goods in mattresses, glass jars, toilet rolls and barbeque charcoal.
